Concussion Rehabilitation
A concussion is a type of brain injury that can occur from a blow to the head or a sudden jolt to the body (whiplash injuries). Recent research shows that physical activity and physical therapy as early as a couple days following injury, is beneficial at decreasing post-concussion symptoms, allows for earlier return to play, and/or shorter days to recovery, and is considered safe for treating post-concussion symptoms.
During rehabilitation, individuals are assessed and treated as a case by case scenario. Concussion injuries will affect everyone in differing ways, a customized treatment plan is necessary to achieve the best possible outcomes. This plan may include a combination of exercises to improve balance, coordination, strength, and endurance. If there are any visual or vestibular (inner ear) issues that may be present as a result of the concussion these will be addressed as well.
Throughout the rehabilitation process adjustments to the treatment plan will be performed as needed. The goal of concussion rehabilitation is to gradually reintroduce the individual to physical activity and cognitive tasks while minimizing symptoms and promoting recovery.
